A New Year

Hello faithful readers! I am popping on for a bit to give you a little update! I know I have been absent on this blog for awhile, but it’s a new year and I have some new goals, one of which is to blog again! Our family has moved from Honolulu, Hawaii back home to Los Angeles. My husband is attending USC film school using the GI Bill and I have been making custom quilts and making YouTube videos, both of which have become a part time job for me. A great job, because it allows me to be at home with my kids and take care of them! This blog will show some behind the scenes, photos of recent projects and other little musings here and there. I have some fun things planned and am happy to begin sharing on this blog again!!

I’ll start by going back a month or 2 and sharing some finished projects and fun things!  First up… When I was preparing to leave Hawaii, my Oahu Modern Quilt Guild girlies and I went out to dinner.  It was a holiday party/goodbye party for me.  They were all SO sweet and each one of them brought me something special as a goodbye gift!  I was and still am floored by their generosity and thoughtfulness!  Here are a few of the items they gave me ;).

Mai, one of the other founding members, make me this sign for me new studio space ;).  She made it with sand and sea colors to remind me of Hawaii.

Another girl, R. gave me this crayon wallet for Little A for the plane ride!  How thoughtful!

R. also gave me this adorable quilted pouch.

Amber made me this pillow cover, which I adore!  It’s currently on my bed ;)

A few girls got me Starbucks cards, a mug and cozy – I think of them every time I use them!

I also recieved some other really cute items, there was so much I didn’t take photos of them all!  Moral of the story is that, I was so surprised and thrilled and then a little sad to leave this group.  But at the same time I was ready for a new beginning.  We always knew Hawaii would be temporary, so it’s nice to be back in SoCal with lots of family and friends.  Can I just tell you how life changing it is to have Grandparents around!!!

Adios for now, I promise it won’t be so long till my next post ;)

Supernova Quilt Complete

Hey Everyone!  I am back from a little Hawaiian staycation ;).  My Dad and Step-mom came to town and we had a great week at the new Disney resort in Ko Olina called the Aulani.  The kids and I had a blast swimming, enjoying the ocean view and spending time with family.

Last night I finished binding my latest finish, the Supernova quilt!  This quilt his heading to a very good friend of mine who just had a baby boy. I had been dying to do this pattern, so I went for it in some fun boy colors.  I have been crushing on the constellations fabric forever, so it was fun to use it in a quilt.

This pattern is in this great book, Quilting Modern.  If you buy this book (and you should!) don’t buy the kindle version, it has errors.  The publisher is aware of them, after I told them, but I’m not sure if they have been corrected.  So I would get the actual copy!  I’m thankful to my friend Amber for texting me the image of the info I was missing!

This pattern came together surprisingly well, I had the top finished in about a week.  I spent a few late nights watching old movies and had fabric spread out all over the kitchen island.

I love the fussy cut constellation heart for the center.

The quilting is very simple.  I was having a really hard time deciding what do do.  I didn’t want to over quilt it and was regretting the decision to quilt it myself since I know I wouldn’t be able to complete it how I really want it without a long-arm.  So I went with simple and let the piecing of the front be the star.

I feel like this quilt is a little overkill for a baby quilt, but I love giving something that they can really grow into and enjoy for longer than the baby days.

It measures 65 x 79

Bright Triangle Quilt

Hey Everybody!  I hope you have having a good week so far!  I have another finished quilt to show you guys!  This is for a 4 year old who loves bright pink, bright purple and Aqua Blue!  She specifically asked for those colors, so her Mama and I found some prints we liked and this was what I came up with.  Enjoy!

Army Quilt Commission

Happy Monday!  I hope you had a nice summer weekend!  We’ve had swim lessons and BBQ’s and play dates at the splash park so it’s been a fun week!

A friend of mine asked me to make a quilts for her kids.  Her son who is about 8 requested an army themed quilt.  Something warm to snuggle up with since they just moved to a colder climate (and cause the baby got one, the older two need one too!).  Here is what I came up with.

IMG_2311Most of the fabric came from fabric.com, 2 of the prints came from 2 different sellers on etsy and the black binding is a moda bella solid from hidden yardage where I teach quilting.  One of my favorite parts of designing a quilt is combining many prints and fabrics from different lines of fabric into one cohesive quilt that fits the person I am making it for and that way it really is one of a kind.

I free-motion quilted it with a meandering pattern on my home machine using a dark grey Aurifil thread.  I also really like the pieced back quilts, even though they are a little more work, its like a double sided quilt – both sides are special!

This quilt measures 44 x 60.

Reversible Quilted Table Runner

A few weeks back I made a table runner for a baby shower that was at my house.  I wanted one side to fit with the theme and the colors of the shower and the other side I wanted something that fit more my decor and color palette.  It was a really fun and quick project, so I thought I’d share!

Here is side No.1, the one I made for the shower.  The theme was English tea ;) and white and aqua were the main colors.

Some close-ups so you can see the fabric.  I honestly don’t remember what fabric this is!  I just picked what matched from Hidden Yardage, my LQS

And now for the back side.

I’m obsessed with this fabric right now… Riley Blake ombre in aqua.

I love both sides, but I’m partial to this one ;).  Oh and how did I not notice the crumbs in my photo?!  Sheesh ;)

Have a wonderful long holiday weekend!!

Full Moon Lagoon Baby Quilt

I had a baby shower at my house last weekend to celebrate my sweet friend and her baby girl.  My friend and her husband are marine biologists and love the sea, so when I found out she was having a girl, I knew the exact fabric I wanted to use.

This fabric is from the collection Full Moon Lagoon.  I used the panel in the center and used 3 types of fabric for outside borders to keep it simple.  The colors in the collection are so nice.

The reference to coral, jellyfish and other marine life was perfect for her.

Have I said how much I loved the colors in this quilt??

Here is the back.  I did organic, ocean-esque quilted lines and used some extra fabric for panels on the back.

So that’s it!  The latest quilt finish!  Have a wonderful Monday ;)
