A New Year

Hello faithful readers! I am popping on for a bit to give you a little update! I know I have been absent on this blog for awhile, but it’s a new year and I have some new goals, one of which is to blog again! Our family has moved from Honolulu, Hawaii back home to Los Angeles. My husband is attending USC film school using the GI Bill and I have been making custom quilts and making YouTube videos, both of which have become a part time job for me. A great job, because it allows me to be at home with my kids and take care of them! This blog will show some behind the scenes, photos of recent projects and other little musings here and there. I have some fun things planned and am happy to begin sharing on this blog again!!

I’ll start by going back a month or 2 and sharing some finished projects and fun things!  First up… When I was preparing to leave Hawaii, my Oahu Modern Quilt Guild girlies and I went out to dinner.  It was a holiday party/goodbye party for me.  They were all SO sweet and each one of them brought me something special as a goodbye gift!  I was and still am floored by their generosity and thoughtfulness!  Here are a few of the items they gave me ;).

Mai, one of the other founding members, make me this sign for me new studio space ;).  She made it with sand and sea colors to remind me of Hawaii.

Another girl, R. gave me this crayon wallet for Little A for the plane ride!  How thoughtful!

R. also gave me this adorable quilted pouch.

Amber made me this pillow cover, which I adore!  It’s currently on my bed ;)

A few girls got me Starbucks cards, a mug and cozy – I think of them every time I use them!

I also recieved some other really cute items, there was so much I didn’t take photos of them all!  Moral of the story is that, I was so surprised and thrilled and then a little sad to leave this group.  But at the same time I was ready for a new beginning.  We always knew Hawaii would be temporary, so it’s nice to be back in SoCal with lots of family and friends.  Can I just tell you how life changing it is to have Grandparents around!!!

Adios for now, I promise it won’t be so long till my next post ;)

Mermaid Holiday Gift Box

Image 13

Hi lovely bloggy readers!

I wanted to share a really fun project my step mom and I have been working on.  First, my step mom is a really great fine artist working in mostly watercolor and printmaking.  I asked her if she would like to do a collaboration with me over the holidays.  We could do a gift box with a theme and each contribute an item or two for the box.  She loved the idea and we have had a lot of fun working on this project over the past few months.

We have currently have the nautical, mermaid theme box ready!  Feather box is on the way ;)

For $36 you get…

1 hand sewn (by me) zip pouch with a cool and modern geometric 100% cotton, organic fabric called On Point by Cloud 9. This triangular print reminded me of nautical flags. Pouch is lined with 100% grey cotton and also has interfacing to give it extra body. This fun zip pouch measures 6 1/4 x 7 1/2 and has a coordinating mint zipper

1 Mermaid collagraph print – One hand pulled collagraph (Mermaid in a Kelp Forest) on acid free, archival BFK printmaking paper, painted with professional grade watercolor and metallic pigments, mounted in a standard size 8×10 soft white archival mat board, ready for a frame made by my super talented step mom Belinda.  I love this print, it is gorgeous!  I told her to save one for me!

1 Set of 4 watercolor postcards featuring paintings of the beach along the Southern California shoreline, Pacific coast clouds, boats hulls in dry dock, and cypress trees in Monterey. The postcards can be mailed, or framed for display. The artwork on these cards was created by Belinda as well!

Supernova Quilt Complete

Hey Everyone!  I am back from a little Hawaiian staycation ;).  My Dad and Step-mom came to town and we had a great week at the new Disney resort in Ko Olina called the Aulani.  The kids and I had a blast swimming, enjoying the ocean view and spending time with family.

Last night I finished binding my latest finish, the Supernova quilt!  This quilt his heading to a very good friend of mine who just had a baby boy. I had been dying to do this pattern, so I went for it in some fun boy colors.  I have been crushing on the constellations fabric forever, so it was fun to use it in a quilt.

This pattern is in this great book, Quilting Modern.  If you buy this book (and you should!) don’t buy the kindle version, it has errors.  The publisher is aware of them, after I told them, but I’m not sure if they have been corrected.  So I would get the actual copy!  I’m thankful to my friend Amber for texting me the image of the info I was missing!

This pattern came together surprisingly well, I had the top finished in about a week.  I spent a few late nights watching old movies and had fabric spread out all over the kitchen island.

I love the fussy cut constellation heart for the center.

The quilting is very simple.  I was having a really hard time deciding what do do.  I didn’t want to over quilt it and was regretting the decision to quilt it myself since I know I wouldn’t be able to complete it how I really want it without a long-arm.  So I went with simple and let the piecing of the front be the star.

I feel like this quilt is a little overkill for a baby quilt, but I love giving something that they can really grow into and enjoy for longer than the baby days.

It measures 65 x 79

Christmas Quilt Commission

Here is a quilt commission I finished up for a friend last week!  A fun Christmas quilt.  I used the Riley Blake A Merry Little Christmas fabric line.  I love the back of this quilt.  The fabric is fun and shows a nice snowy winter scene.  My friend requested snowmen and reindeer and this fabric line delivered!  They were very excited to cuddle up under it this winter, especially since their family just moved to New York!!
